Eligibility

General Eligibility

  • Dwellings must be existing single family homes used year-round; including detached homes, row houses, duplexes, and mobile homes.
  • Space heating must be provided by electric baseboards or an electric central furnace or boiler. Homes with Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) or heat pumps are not eligible.
  • All rebates must be pre-approved. If a system is purchased and/or installed before pre-approval is given, a rebate will not be provided.
  • Participants must install all equipment required to operate the system (stove/insert, chimney, venting, required safety features, etc).
  • Installations must meet all applicable codes.
  • Furnace ducts and hot water pipes being installed should be kept within the building envelope. If this is not an option, pipes and/or ducts must be properly sealed and insulated. 
  • Equipment must be installed and in service and all rebate application forms received within 4 months of being pre-approved.
  • If you are combining Efficiency Nova Scotia rebates with other available rebates, in no circumstance can the total amount of rebates received be more than the total costs.
  • Rebates are not applied to replacement of existing equipment.
  • Applicants must be willing to receive a random inspection of the home, which may occur before, during or after the equipment is installed.
  • Homeowners must allow Efficiency Nova Scotia to gain energy-usage information from their utility.
  • Homeowners must be willing to be contacted by Efficiency Nova Scotia, or its agents, to complete a survey regarding their participation in the program.

Wood / Pellet System Eligibility   

  • Eligible wood/pellet equipment must meet either the CSA-B415.1-10 or the US EPA 40CFR Part 60 AAA standard. All wood/pellet stoves must be EPA or CSA certified with emissions rating of ≤ 4.5 g/hr for total filterable particulate matter (TPM). All wood/pellet furnaces or boilers must be EPA or CSA certified with emissions rating of ≤ 4.5 g/hr or ≤ 0.40g/MJ for TPM.For a list of potential equipment, click here.
  • All wood/pellet systems must be installed by a Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT) certified professional that has either “Technician” or “Sweep” certification. Alternatively, an installation can occur by a non-WETT certified installer, however the entire system must be subsequently inspected and approved by a WETT certified inspector.   • Outdoor wood/pellet furnaces or boilers are not eligible for rebates.
  • Hybrid systems are acceptable installations. These include systems where there is a backup heating system (including electric) to the wood or pellet furnace/boiler. As an alternative, applicants will also be permitted to keep their electric baseboards as a back-up heating system.

    Natural Gas and Propane System Eligibility

  • All gas installations must be undertaken by certified gas technicians.
  • Applicants that are replacing electric space heating and electric water heating, are eligible to apply for both of the equipment rebates above even if they install one boiler system that provides both space and water heating.
  • The electric heating system(s) must be removed when installing a new central gas system or domestic hot water system.
  • If replacing electric appliances with a gas range or gas dryer the electric appliances need to be completely removed from the home.

    Geothermal and Central Air Source Heat Pumps

  • A company qualified by the Canadian Geoexchange Coalition (CGC) must install new ground source heat equipment. The CGC must also certify the system after installation.
  • Central Ducted Air Source Heat Pumps, must appear as “Energy Star” certified on Natural Resources Canada’s website in order to qualify.

    Drain Water Heat Recovery

  • Drain Water Heat Recovery system must appear on the list of approved products and have an efficiency rating of 42% or higher. Click here to see the list of approved products.
