Solar Water Requirements

  1. System must be designed for year-round operation for domestic water use (although other applications may also be incorporated into system design-e.g. space heat).
  2. Solar water systems must be listed on Natural Resources Canada's List of Accepted Solar Collectors.
  3. System was purchased and installed after May 1, 2010.
  4. System was installed according to industry best practice and manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Minimum R3 pipe insulation must be installed on:
    a)  The first 3 metres (10 feet) of the cold and all hot water piping (if accessible) connected to the conventional water heater.
    b)   All piping connecting the solar storage tank to the solar collector.
    c) All piping connecting the solar storage tank to the conventional water heater.
  6. Applicant must own the house where the system is installed.
  7. Limit of one solar water heating rebate per eligible Nova Scotian household.
  8. Efficiency Nova Scotia reserves the right to decline installations where it is determined that the system will not meet performance potential.
  9. Legible copies of receipts and interior and exterior photos of the solar water system must be included with the application form.
  10. System must be installed on residential buildings of 2 units or less.

Efficiency Nova Scotia recommends that those planning to install a solar system obtain three quotes before deciding on a system and contractor. To learn about the different types of panels you can use, click here. Eligible panels must be listed under one of the following:

- CSA 378 List of Accepted Collectors (click here for list)

- CSA 379 List of Accepted Systems (click here for list)

- CSA List of Solar Concentrators (click here for list)

- Or the former F378 list, previously administered by Natural Resources Canada

Please note that all electrical components that are used with the overall system must be properly approved for use in Nova Scotia (ie. a CE or CCC marking is not acceptable - approval must be equivalent to CSA).

Efficiency Nova Scotia also offers solar air heating and water heating rebates for commercial systems. For more information, click here.
