Heating System Rebates Terms and Conditions

General Program Eligibility

  • Equipment must be new, installed, and in service, and all rebate documents received within 180 days of installation.

  • Participation in the Home Energy Assessment program precludes homeowners from receiving rebates for the same upgrades in other Efficiency Nova Scotia programs. Only rebates from one program will be issued for any upgrade. This includes Efficiency Nova Scotia point-of-sale rebates from participating contractors.

  • Homes must be existing (at least six months past the occupancy permit with 6 months of utility usage history) single-family homes used year round; including detached homes, row houses, duplexes, individual condo units, and mobile homes. Garages, new construction projects, off-grid homes and additions are not eligible for rebates. Cottages, secondary residences not used year-round and seasonal homes are not eligible for rebates.

  • Only Homes with residential rate codes are eligible for residential program rebates. The dwelling must be primarily used as a residence and must meet the above building criteria. Business/commercial rate codes are not eligible for rebates.

  • Participants must install all equipment as well as all peripheral equipment required to operate the system (stove, chimney, venting, required safety features, etc.). Installations must meet all applicable codes and applicants are responsible for obtaining all required permits.

  • Equipment must be purchased from a licensed retailer or installer. Incentives are not available for the purchase and installation of secondhand equipment.

  • All new equipment must be inspected and/or installed by the appropriate certified professional. If not installed by a certified professional, it must be inspected by the appropriate certified professional. Efficiency Nova Scotia reserves the right to request proof of installation, inspection, and/or completion certificates.

  • Maximum payment will not exceed 50 percent of the equipment purchase price. Applicants and/or contractors are responsible for all costs associated with sales tax, installation, and disposal/recycling. Applicant is responsible for any tax liability of rebate payment.

  • Applicant must be the owner of the home that is to receive heating upgrades and must be willing to complete a survey or receive an inspection of the home, to verify the equipment installed.

  • Homeowners must allow Efficiency Nova Scotia to gain energy usage information from their utility.

  • Efficiency Nova Scotia reserves the right to decline rebates where it is determined that the system will not meet performance potential.

  • Rebates are not available for space heating systems and/or system components installed in a previously unconditioned space.

  • The applicant must submit the following rebate documents to be eligible for rebates within 180 days of purchase and installation: (1) Heating System Rebates application, (2) proof of purchase and installation with all required information, (3) photos of the installed system, (4) a copy of an electric bill, and other information deemed necessary by Efficiency Nova Scotia to adequately review the rebate request. It is up to the participant to ensure that all required documents are submitted within the 180 day time frame as indicated on the application form and program criteria.

  • Proof of purchase, includes invoice(s) [which meet the Heating System Rebates Invoice Guidelines]. Note: Nova Scotia Power Lease Agreements no longer qualify as a proof of purchase.

  • Rebates are not available for the replacement of working biomass equipment. If replacing nonworking biomass equipment, contact Efficiency Nova Scotia before to purchasing new equipment to verify eligibility for rebates.

  • The applicant assumes all responsibility for the selecting and installing of products and services used in any renovations, ensuring any planned upgrades are covered by their home insurance policy, obtaining all applicable permits and paying all applicable taxes on work performed.

  • Home with a wood stove as a primary heat source must list their secondary heat source on their application to be eligible for rebates.

Heat Pump Eligibility:

  • Only ductless mini-split heat pumps listed on our Cold Climate Heat Pump List qualify for rebates. Ductless mini-split heat pump model must be on the Cold Climate Heat Pump List at the time of purchase for a Heating System Rebates incentive.

  • Slim ducted or mixed ducted mini-split systems are not eligible for rebates.

  • Furnace ducts and hot water pipes being installed should be kept within the building envelope. If this is not an option, pipes and/or ducts must be properly sealed and insulated.

  • Rebates are not available for the replacement of working or non-working heat pump equipment (ducted, ductless, air to water and geothermal).

  • Only systems which are AHRI certified are eligible for a rebate. For central heating systems, the outdoor component must be matched with a corresponding indoor component that when paired, have a certified AHRI reference number.

Wood/Pellet Heating Eligibility:

  • Furnace ducts and hot water pipes being installed should be kept within the building envelope. If this is not an option, pipes and/or ducts must be properly sealed and insulated. Please note: Outdoor wood/pellet furnaces or boilers are not eligible for rebates.

  • Rebates are not available for the replacement of working equipment. If replacing non-working equipment, please contact us prior to making your purchase and we can confirm eligibility and rebates. A letter from your contractor will be required to indicate the state of the previous equipment.

  • Only wood/pellet burning equipment meeting the eligibility criteria listed in rebate guide are eligible for rebates.

Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) Eligibility:

  • ETS systems must be replacing or supplementing electric resistance heating in 100% electrically heated homes. To be eligible for rebates. ETS systems must be replacing or supplementing 100% electric radiant heat through electric baseboards or electric boiler. Homes heated by centrally ducted heat pumps, air-to-water heat pumps and geothermal are not eligible for ETS rebates.

  • Incentives are NOT available for non-electric heated homes. Entire homes or homes with some portion heated by oil, natural gas, propane, and wood furnaces and boilers are not eligible for rebates.

  • Rebates are not available for the replacement of working/non-working ETS units.

  • Homes must show a history of 100% electric resistance heat for at least 6 months to qualify for an incentive.

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program Eligibility for Heating System Rebates:

  • Participant household income must qualify as median or below for Nova Scotia, after taxes defined by Statistics Canada.

  • Property must be one of the eligible property types listed by Natural Resources Canada.

  • Homes must be a primary residence and applicant the owner of the home. New constructions, offgrid homes or additions are not eligible.

  • Homes must be heated with oil and new heat pumps sized to provide a whole home heating system.

  • Participant must not have received money for a heat pump as part of the Canada Greener Homes Grant or Loan

  • Participant agrees to allow Efficiency Nova Scotia to share their information with Natural Resources Canada as it pertains to the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program.

  • Only heat pump models that are listed on the Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps – Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program list are eligible for a rebate.

  • Participants agree to all other terms, conditions and eligibility criteria set out by the Natural Resources Canada Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program and EfficiencyOne.

Release of Information:

I hereby consent and acknowledge that:

  • I am the registered owner of the home where the system is installed and that all information on my application provided to Efficiency Nova Scotia is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. Any willful misstatement may be cause for the rejection and cancellation of my application.

  • I have read and agree to all program eligibility criteria listed on the pages that make up this rebate application.

  • I understand that I will only receive incentives on installed equipment that meets the required efficiency standards (or maximum emissions standards) set by Efficiency Nova Scotia as part of this program.

  • My current electrical utility is hereby authorized to release to Efficiency Nova Scotia my billing account information, including such details as the name of the account and the number of kilowatt hours of electrical consumption pertaining to the residence of the above noted homeowner.

  • Efficiency Nova Scotia, its agents or auditors may contact me for the purposes of program administration, implementation and evaluation and/or provide me with further information on this or other conservation-related programs.

  • Efficiency Nova Scotia is a franchise operated by EfficiencyOne, official Licensee of the Province of Nova Scotia. By providing your consent you agree to release your personal information to the current and successive holders of the Efficiency Nova Scotia franchise.
