Shift and Save

Part of transitioning to a greener future involves modernizing technology and making a shift. That’s why we’re working to pilot new innovative solutions so customers join us in that journey. Through our new pilot program with Nova Scotia Power, we’ll be testing how water heater controllers can help improve operation of the grid.

About the Pilot

Peak demand happens when Nova Scotian’s use large amounts of electricity at the exact same time, meaning that if too many people are showering every morning at 7am or cooking every night at 5pm it can strain our electrical grid. It’s during these times that more electricity is used and create surges that are more costly.

Efficiency Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power have partnered to launch this pilot and gain valuable insights on how we can use technology to improve operation of the grid. We’re inviting 200 customers to join us in this program where you’ll receive a complimentary smart water heater controller. Once connected through your home’s Wi-Fi network, the device will shift when electricity is used to heat your water away from the peak demand.

Working together to reduce peak demand can result in cost savings that benefit all Nova Scotians.

You’ll be doing your part as we work toward a greener energy future for Nova Scotia.

Enjoy handy features such as leak detection and maintenance alerts and get better insight on the health of your water heater.

You’ll be one of the first customers to experience the benefits of the technology and you get to keep the complimentary device after the pilot is complete ($300 value)

You’re helping Nova Scotian’s save – the reduced peak impact can result in direct cost savings for all customers.

In addition to the complimentary device, you’ll receive a $20 Tim Hortons e-gift card when the pilot is complete.

Why should I participate?

Gain access to free technology to help you manage your electric hot water heater and contribute to a cleaner and more efficient electrical grid.

Am I required to participate?

No. The pilot is strictly voluntary, but we would love for you be take part in the journey with us!

Will this cost me anything or will there be an increase in my water bill?

There is no cost to the homeowner at any point during the pilot.

How long is the pilot project?

This pilot will take place from November 2021 to November 2022. Device installations will begin in September 2021.

Will this program affect my hot water supply? How long and often will you shut off my water heater?

How long your water heater will be turned down or off depends on the specifics of the event but will often be complete in a couple of hours. Every step will be taken during this time to ensure that you have enough hot water for your typical usage – it is unlikely you will even be aware that your water heater was adjusted!

What is expected of me throughout the pilot?

At the first visit:

  • To install the device, we’ll need access to your electric panel, water heater, and your wi-fi router as the device will connect to your internet.

Throughout the 12-month pilot period:

  • You may be asked to complete a few short surveys. Otherwise, just sit back and relax.

At the end of the pilot:

  • You’ll get to keep the controller!
