Unlock Energy Savings with a Home Energy Assessment
6 MIN READ
Is your home as energy efficient as it could be? Many Nova Scotians are surprised to discover just how much energy – and money – they're losing through poorly insulated walls, outdated heating systems or air leaks. See Moderate Income Rebate and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program for details and to start your application.
A Home Energy Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your home's energy performance. For just $199 (which can be waived for moderate income households), a Registered Energy Advisor will visit your home for a two-to-three-hour assessment, checking insulation levels, air leakage and mechanical systems. We'll provide you with a personalized roadmap that shows you exactly where your home is losing energy and what upgrades would make the biggest difference. These upgrades can qualify for significant rebates. Check out Home Energy Assessment to learn more about how much you can save on eligible products.
If you're a moderate-income household interested in a free assessment, you should apply ahead of time to see if you qualify. To qualify, your household income must meet certain limits. See Moderate Income Rebate for details.
Booking your assessment is easy. Just reach out to one of our Delivery Agent Partners who will schedule your initial assessment at a time that works for you. Wait times typically range from two to four weeks, though they may be slightly longer during the colder months when demand increases. After your assessment, you'll receive an EnerGuide rating of your home's current energy performance along with a detailed Renovation Upgrade Report. The EnerGuide rating describes the energy performance of your home and is an estimate of the net amount of energy your house consumes in a year. The lower the number, the better the energy performance of your home. You then have 12 months to complete any upgrades you choose before scheduling your final assessment.
One common misconception is that contractors or Energy Advisors manage the entire project. In reality, as a homeowner, you're in the driver's seat. While our experts provide recommendations and support, you decide which upgrades to tackle and when. This puts you in control of your home's energy future. Most homeowners complete their upgrades within six to 12 months, though some finish in as little as two months. If you need more time, just contact your Service Organization for an extension.
While lower energy bills are usually why homeowners get a Home Energy Assessment, the biggest benefit homeowners report is improved comfort. Imagine no more drafty rooms in the winter or overheated spaces in summer. When your home maintains a comfortable temperature more efficiently, that financial anxiety melts away too. The assessment process itself is also educational. You'll gain valuable knowledge about how your home uses energy and how you can improve efficiency, even beyond the recommended upgrades.
