Dalhousie’s Rochelle Owen wins Bright Business Award
(Halifax, N.S.) – Five winners were awarded Efficiency Nova Scotia’s Bright Business awards today. Rochelle Owen, Director of the Office of Sustainability at Dalhousie University took home the Leadership Award (view video).
The Leadership Award recognizes an individual’s leadership, contribution and impact on the energy efficiency industry in Nova Scotia.
With over 25 years of experience in the environmental and sustainability field, Owen helped create the first Office of Sustainability at Dalhousie and has lead energy efficiency projects throughout the Truro and Halifax campuses.
“Energy efficiency is an easy way to start for any organization looking to improve their sustainability,” says Owen. “At Dalhousie we started by looking at our buildings and systems and seeing where the waste was.”
Since beginning her work at Dalhousie, the university has completed many sustainable construction projects including retrofitting buildings, upgrading lighting across campus, and installing urinal tank controllers.
“Rochelle has played a huge role in making the largest university in Atlantic Canada an environmental leader and energy efficient,” says Monica MacLean, spokesperson for Efficiency Nova Scotia. “She’s engaged students, faculty and operations staff, creating an environmental culture throughout campuses.”
The Bright Business Awards is now in its fifth year and recognizes organizations and individuals in Nova Scotia for their achievements and leadership in the field of energy efficiency. Other 2016 winners include:
- Housing Nova Scotia and Passive House Design, Innovation Award
- Streamline Engineering Services, Partnership Award
- Municipality of the District of Guysborough, Community Award
- Farnell Packaging, Engagement Award
Award winners were announced during the fifth annual Bright Business Conference at the World Trade and Convention Center in Halifax on Wednesday, October 19th. Speakers included the President and CEO of the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance, Elizabeth McDonald, and Nova Scotia’s Energy Minister, Michel Samson.
