The Retrofit Program offers tailored technical and financial support to help businesses reduce their electrical energy consumption and system-peak demand. Retrofit supports larger more complex measures, involving technology, equipment, and system improvements.

The Retrofit Program is structured to accommodate a wide range of project types and works directly with participants to identify and implement projects that other Efficiency Nova Scotia programs don’t support.

Benefits of Retrofit

  • Feasibility studies increase confidence in achieving energy savings, while avoiding wasted resources on expensive capital projects that may not be worthwhile
  • Retrofit projects can reduce operational costs, increase asset value, and make your business more competitive

Features of Retrofit

  • Feasibility study incentive for up to 100% of study cost, up to $15,000 (pre-approval for study is required)
Implementation incentives of up to $0.15/kWh of first-year energy savings
  • Consultation and project support from Efficiency Nova Scotia Project Engineers throughout the project, including measurement and verification of energy savings.

Common Retrofit Measures

  • Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Motors and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Refrigeration
  • Compressed Air Retrofits & Leak Management
  • Cogeneration

The Old Orchard Inn in Wolfville is using energy efficiency to their advantage by completing many upgrades like a heat pump, LED lighting, HVAC controls, in-room thermostat controls—and the installation of almost 300 solar panels. By retrofitting their building, the inn was able to cut down on their utility bills and create a more comfortable atmosphere for guests, which is key in the hospitality industry.
