Important Notice Some contractors and sales companies in Nova Scotia are misleading customers by falsely claiming ties to Efficiency Nova Scotia and using aggressive sales tactics. Efficiency Nova Scotia only contacts individuals who have applied to its programs.
Earn financial incentives for reducing electricity use in your facilities. Retrofit your space to fit your needs.
Need help?
Open to institutional, not-for-profit and commercial (including multi-unit residential) projects.
Eligible projects will receive an incentive of $0.15/kWh based on verified first-year energy savings.
Freedom and flexibility to retrofit buildings according to your needs, with multiple upgrades in a single transaction.

Work with your consultant to complete and submit a Pay-for-Performance Project Application.
Open to institutional, not-for-profit and commercial (including multi-unit residential) projects.
General eligibility Open to participants who have not yet entered a binding agreement to acquire energy efficiency measures or services required to install the measures.
Project eligibility
The facility must be served directly or indirectly by Nova Scotia Power Target project savings must be greater than 10% reduction of annual energy consumption per facility
Energy use eligibility Facilities must consume at least 1,000,000 kWh annually. Up to five buildings can be combined to meet this requirement.
Documentation Participants must have a minimum of 12 months of interval meter data of typical usage, at hourly resolution or better, from a revenue-grade meter.
The Pay-for-Performance program can help you achieve energy savings of 10% or more with the freedom to retrofit buildings the way you want.
This program offers financial incentives to eligible organizations that significantly reduce their electricity usage. It uses a customer-driven and flexible approach, making it easier for participants to join. The program is designed to accommodate various needs and support different energy efficiency projects. Organizations don't need to submit complicated engineering studies to prove the effectiveness of their upgrades. Instead, the energy savings will be verified using interval meter data collected for one year after the installation. Incentives will be paid once it's confirmed there's been at least a 10% reduction in electricity consumption.
Sometimes. Here are some of those cases: 1. The project consists of minimal upgrades, or a single measure upgrade, OR 2. You have a tight budget, OR 3. You have a short” deadline. Here are some cases where Pay-for-Performance would be better: 1. The scope of work involves comprehensive lighting, HVAC and envelope improvements, OR 2. You have complex technologies in the building, OR 3. You have time and budget to commit to investigating all potential energy opportunities in the facility.
We establish eligibility using several criteria, including business type and size. This ensures that we can focus on large organizations with high savings potential, giving Nova Scotia ratepayers the best return on investment in terms of cost-effective energy-use reduction.
No. Energy audits and feasibility studies aren't part of the P4P program so no funding is allocated. Incentives focus on rewarding actual performance, promoting energy-saving measures that enhance building efficiency and recognizing the effort needed to meet energy reduction goals. A P4P Consultant will identify potential energy efficiency upgrades and estimate energy savings as part of their services. If a project starts in the Custom program and receives feasibility study funding but later qualifies for P4P, any funding already received will be deducted from future P4P incentives.
No, only the electric energy savings can be used to determine eligibility.
The incentive is paid at a rate of $0.15/kWh for the first full year of energy savings achieved.
The incentives are paid to the participating organization.
Organizations are paid for the energy savings achieved.
A minimum of 10% electrical energy reduction is required, and incentives will only be paid for electric energy savings.
The 10% savings represents electrical energy savings. No incentives are provided for other non-electric fuel types under this program.
P4P participants are NOT eligible for other Efficiency Nova Scotia energy efficiency incentives or rebates, including direct point-of-sale rebates, during the duration of the agreement, for the same P4P energy efficiency measures at a participating P4P site. Solar incentives are permitted but will occur under a separate rebate application (and the P4P program must be notified). Any on-site generation must be outside the project boundary.
This program is designed to be comprehensive, so anticipated savings will come from multiple energy conservation measures. If anticipated savings come from a single measure (such as lighting), the participant will be referred to prescriptive rebate programs instead.
Participants and consultants will work together to get the site's electrical utility history either from the electrical utility and/or Efficiency Nova Scotia.
No. There's no cap on total project cost and no need to submit project costs or invoices.
P4P consultants are encouraged to seek participants and bring them into the program. Get in touch with us for a participant application.
