Tips to Prepare Your Home for a Storm

A warning sign with the words "stormy weather ahead" against grey skies.

We're no strangers to bad weather in Nova Scotia. Preparing your home for a storm is essential. Make sure your family and property stay safe and protected with these tips:

Preparing Your Home Heating

Check Your Heating System Ensure your heating system (electric heaters, furnace, or boiler) is in good working condition before the storm. Replace any damaged parts or filters if needed. Remember: Heat pumps rely on electricity to operate, so during a power outage, they will not function. Alternative Heating Have alternative heating sources available, such as a portable space heater or a wood-burning stove, in case your main heating system fails during the storm. Fuel Supply If you use a fuel-based heating system, like oil or propane, make sure you have an adequate supply of fuel to last through the storm. Insulation Ensure your home is well-insulated to retain heat. Seal any drafts around doors and windows with weather stripping or caulk. Generator Consider having a backup generator that can power your heating system, especially if you live in an area prone to extended power outages.

Managing Electronics and Appliances

Surge Protectors Use surge protectors for all your sensitive electronics, such as computers, TVs and gaming consoles. This will help protect them from power surges during the storm. Unplug When Necessary Unplug non-essential electronics and appliances during the storm to prevent damage from power fluctuations and lightning strikes. Backup Power If you have essential electronics like medical equipment, consider investing in a battery backup system or uninterruptible power supply to keep them running during power outages. Emergency Lighting Have flashlights, battery-powered lanterns and candles (with appropriate safety precautions) on hand for lighting in case of power outages.

General Storm Preparedness

Emergency Kit Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential items like non-perishable food, water, blankets, a first-aid kit and a battery-operated weather radio. Stay Informed Keep yourself updated on weather alerts and warnings through a battery-operated or hand-cranked weather radio or a weather app on your phone. Evacuation Plan Have an evacuation plan in place if you live in an area prone to flooding or other severe weather events. Know your local evacuation routes and shelters.
