The Community Award recognizes a Nova Scotia community that has excelled in energy efficiency campaigns or projects.
The town of Bridgewater, as part of their Integrated Community Sustainability Plan has identified reducing energy poverty for 20% of the Town’s residents.
“Our Town’s sustainability initiatives have always valued the participation of our community stakeholders, businesses, and residents,” says Town of Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell.
“Through programs like Energize Bridgewater, our new public transit service, active transportation, and our community gardens initiative, many community members and organizations have become quite deeply involved in our work,” he added. “This kind of collaborative effort is also a key plank in Bridgewater’s bid to win the national Smart Cities Challenge – we’ve launched one of the most comprehensive engagement efforts our Town has ever undertaken to design creative and lasting solutions to the urgent problem of energy poverty.”
On June 1, Bridgewater was revealed to be one of only five finalists for Infrastructure Canadas $5 million Smart Cities Challenge prize. Bridgewater will receive $250,000 to go towards creating a final proposal, with the aim of reducing energy poverty in Bridgewater.
The Town of Bridgewater has demonstrated strong, forward-thinking leadership by recognizing and prioritizing the needs of those living in their community,” says Janet Tobin, spokesperson for Efficiency Nova Scotia. “The Town has invested in sustainability planning and are inspiring others to take action.”
