(Halifax, N.S.) – Five winners were awarded Efficiency Nova Scotia’s Bright Business awards today. The Municipality of the District of Guysborough took home the Community Award (view video).

The Community award recognizes a Nova Scotia community that has excelled in energy efficiency campaigns or projects.

The municipality has completed a number of different green initiatives, including major energy upgrades and retrofits throughout the area.

“We’ve had energy retrofits completed in all of our municipal buildings, from Guysborough to Canso,” says Vernon Pitts, Warden for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough. “We’re also the first in the province to own and operate a large scale wind farm.”

Investments in renewables and energy efficiency has helped Guysborough emerge as an environmental leader in Nova Scotia. The municipality is also partnering with Efficiency Nova Scotia on the Property Assessed Clean Energy program (PACE), bringing low-interest loans to homeowners looking to make their home more energy efficient.

“The Municipality of the District of Guysborough has set emission targets and is committed to reducing emissions throughout their community,” says Monica MacLean, spokesperson for Efficiency Nova Scotia. “They’ve found great success in pairing renewable targets with energy efficiency.”
